                                 MEDICAL SURGICAL NURSING

The department of Medical and Surgical Nursing was established in the year 2009 with Under Graduate programme. The teaching programme for B.Sc(N) help the student to understand the principles and concepts of Medical Surgical Nursing and acquiring knowledge and develop professional skills in caring for patients with Medical and Surgical disorders in variety of health care settings at home and hospital.

The Postgraduate programme was established in the year of 2011. It is designed to assess the students in developing expertise and in depth knowledge in the field of Medical and Surgical nursing. It will help the student to appreciate the patients as a holistic individual and develop skill to function as a Medical and Surgical nurse. It will further enable the students to function as a nurse educator, manager and clinical researcher in the field of Medical and Surgical Nursing.

Philosophy:

Medical and Surgical Nursing department believes that nursing contributes to the health services in a vital and significant way in the health care delivery system. It aims at identifying the health needs of the people, planning and providing quality care in collaboration with other health professionals and community group. It also aims at provision of promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative aspects of care to people across their life span in wide variety of health care settings based upon application of basic concept and principles derived from the physical biological, behavioural sciences, medical and surgical nursing.

Aim:

• apply the knowledge from physical, biological and behavioral sciences, medicine including alternative system and nursing in providing nursing care to individuals, families and communities.
• demonstrate understanding of life style and other factors which affect the health status of individuals and groups.
• provide nursing care based on steps of nursing process in collaboration with the individuals and groups.
• utilize the latest trends and technology in providing health care.

                                 COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING

The department of community health nursing was established in the year 2009 to with Under Graduate programme. The teaching programme for B.Sc(N) students will help them to understand the principles and concepts of community health nursing and acquire knowledge & develop professional skills in caring for clients in the community.
It is designed to assess the students in developing expertise and in depth knowledge in the field of Community health nursing. It will help the student to appreciate the patients as a holistic individual and develop skill to function as a specialized Community Health Nursing. It will further enable the students to function as an educator, manager, researcher in the field of Community Health Nursing.


Philosophy

We the faculty members of the department, believe that knowledge about the community health nursing among nursing students will ensure competence in functioning the different levels of health programmes implemented at the community, appreciate a desirable attitude in students form the basis for amalgamation of knowledge into practice in applying a holistic, comprehensive nursing care of individuals and families both in the rural and urban communities, realize that graduate nursing students at all levels of learning will integrate the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains with application of evidence based community education in upgrading the critical thinking skills and standards required for a legal and ethical community nursing practice.

Objectives

At the end of the community health nursing course the student will be able to
• function efficiently as a community health nurse at various levels of health care delivery system
• Work effectively as a community health nurse by integrating principles of various levels of prevention plan and organize various clinics including the principles of national and state level progrmmes
• participate in various health programmes applying the principles of supervision, education and effective communication demonstrate the right knowledge , skill, and attitude in caring for individuals and families in the community
• exhibit accountability in teaching and supervising the primary health care personnel at various levels of health care delivery system in imparting a comprehensive community nursing care record and reports vital and day to day events that occur among families and communities.
This department offers programs to help the professionals understand the basic principles of family and community health in rural and urban areas. Clinical Experience for both undergraduate and postgraduate students is provided at the Community Health Centre, Poonthurai, Taluk Hospital Neyyattinkara and Primary Health Centre Balaramapuram.

                                 OBSTETRICS & GYNAECOLOGY

The department of obstetrics and gynecological nursing was established in the year 2011 for undergraduate programme. The teaching programme for B.Sc. (Nursing) students will help them to understand the principles and concepts of obstetrics and gynecological nursing and acquiring knowledge and develop professional skills in caring for mothers with normal physiological changes and disorders related to pregnancy and child birth in variety of health care settings at home and in hospitals.
It was designed to assess the students in developing expertise and in depth knowledge in the field of obstetrics and gynecological nursing. The programme help the students to appreciate the patients as holistic individual and develop skill to function as a specialized obstetrics and gynecological nursing and also enable the students to function as an educator, manager, researcher in the field of obstetrics and gynecological nursing.

Aim:

The aim of the obstetrics and gynecological nursing program in nursing is to prepare under and post graduates to resume responsibilities as registered midwife specialists, educators, administrators in a wide variety of professional settings.

Objectives:

On completion of the OBG nursing programme, the student is able to:

• describe the epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology and diagnostic assessment of women with obstetric and gynecological conditions
• perform physical, psychosocial, cultural & spiritual assessment of antenatal intranatal and postnatal.
• demonstrate competence in caring for women with obstetrical and gynecological conditions and manage obstetrical emergencies.
• demonstrate competence in caring for high risk newborn.
• Identify and Manage obstetrical and neonatal emergencies as per protocol.
• practice infection control measures.
• utilize recent technology and various diagnostic, therapeutic modalities in the management of obstetrical, gynecological and neonatal care.
• demonstrate skill in handling various equipments/ gadgets used for obstetrical, gynecological and neonatal care.

This department imparts in depth knowledge and skills for undergraduate students in child birth and labour procedures. Students learn to give total care to normal and high risk women during pregnancy, labour and pueperium.

                                 Psychiatric Nursing
The department of Mental Health Nursing was established in the year 2011 for undergraduate programme. The teaching programme for B.sc (N) students will help them to understand the principles and concepts of Mental Health Nursing and acquiring knowledge and develop professional skills in caring for patients with psychiatric illnesses in variety of Health care settings in the Hospital and at home.
It is designed to assess the students in developing expertise and in depth knowledge in the field of specialty Mental Health Nursing. The program helps the student to appreciate the patients as a holistic individual and develop skills to function as a specialized Mental Health Nurse and also enable the student to function as a specialty educator, Manager, Researcher in the field of Mental Health Nursing.

The aim of the Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing program in Nursing is to prepare graduates to assume responsibilities as Registered Nurse Specialists, Educators, and Administrators in a wide variety of health care settings.

5. demonstrate skills in carrying out Crisis Intervention.
6. appreciate the legal and ethical issues pertaining to psychiatric Nursing.
7. identify areas research in the field of Psychiatric Nursing.
8. prepare a design for layout and describe standards for management of Psychiatric units/emergency units/hospitals.
9. demonstrate the role of Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner in various therapeutics strategies.
10. describe various types of alternative system of medicines used in Psychiatric settings.
11. incorporate evidence based Nursing practice and identify the areas of research in the field of Psychiatric Nursing

                                 CHILD HEALTH NURSING

The department of Child Health Nursing was established in the year 2011 for Under Graduate programme. The department of Child Health Nursing helps the students to understand the modern concept of child care, develop in depth understanding of identification, prevention and nursing management of common problems of neonate and children. They provide family centered care in clinical and community setting.
